The Two Friends and The Bag of Gold

A story about worry, mindfulness, and the treasure of the present moment

Two friends walking on a dusty road, one with eyes closed, the other finding a bag of gold

Long ago, in a small village surrounded by green fields and dusty roads, there lived two men who were known to everyone for their very different ways of looking at life. Though they were close friends, their personalities were as different as night and day.

One of the men was always sad and worried. He constantly thought about what might go wrong in the future. Even when everything around him was peaceful, his mind was filled with fear and doubt. People in the village often saw him sitting alone, staring into the distance with a troubled face.

The other man, however, was the complete opposite. He was cheerful and full of life. No matter what happened, he always found a reason to smile. He believed that worrying about the future only stole the joy of today. Whenever people saw him, he was usually humming a song or greeting others with a warm laugh.

Despite their differences, the two men shared a strong friendship.

One morning, they decided to go on a long journey together to visit a town far away. The journey would take them through forests, hills, and small villages. The happy man was excited about the adventure. He packed his small bag, tied his shoes, and started the journey with a bright smile on his face.

The sad man also prepared for the journey, but instead of excitement, his mind was full of worries.

As they began walking along the dusty road that led out of their village, the happy man started singing a cheerful song. The wind was cool, birds were chirping in the trees, and the sun was shining gently in the sky. But the sad man could not enjoy any of it.

After walking for some time, he sighed deeply and worried about his future. The happy man looked at him kindly and wondered why anyone would worry when the road was clear and the day was beautiful.

The sad man shook his head. He believed that life was full of problems. He worried about something terrible happening to him one day. His mind was filled with the fear of becoming blind. He imagined how difficult it would be to walk, to travel, and to survive without sight.

The happy man tried to explain that worrying about something that had not happened and might never happen was pointless.

But the sad man continued thinking about it. The thought became so strong in his mind that he suddenly decided to experience how difficult it would be if he were blind. Before the happy man could respond, the sad man tightly closed his eyes and declared that he would walk like a blind man.

The happy man shook his head but decided to stay beside his friend. The road ahead was uneven, and there were small stones scattered along the path.

As the sad man walked with his eyes closed, he stretched his hands forward and moved slowly, afraid of falling. The happy man carefully walked beside him, watching every step. Whenever the sad man was about to trip over a stone or step into a small hole, the happy man gently guided him.

The sad man continued walking blindly, imagining all the troubles he might face in the future. Meanwhile, the happy man quietly protected him, making sure he did not stumble or fall.

After some time, something shiny caught the happy man's eye on the side of the road. He stopped walking and looked closely. There, lying near a bush, was a small leather purse. Curious, he picked it up and opened it. Inside the purse were bright gold coins that sparkled in the sunlight. Inside the purse were twelve bright gold coins that sparkled in the sunlight.

The happy man was surprised but remained calm. He held the purse in his hand and looked at his friend, who was still walking with his eyes tightly closed. He called out to his friend and told him that he could open his eyes now.

The sad man slowly stopped and opened his eyes. The first thing he saw was the purse full of shining gold coins in the happy man's hand. His eyes widened with shock.

The happy man explained that he had found it on the road just moments ago.

The sad man looked at the purse and then looked down at the road. Suddenly, he realized something important. While he had been walking with his eyes closed, worrying about becoming blind in the future, he had completely missed the good fortune that lay right in front of him. If he had simply walked normally and enjoyed the journey, he might have been the one to find the purse.

At that moment, he felt deeply ashamed of himself. He sat down on a rock beside the road and held his head in his hands. He realized that all this time he had been worrying about things that may never happen. Because of his negative thinking, he had missed a wonderful opportunity.

The happy man sat beside him and smiled kindly. He explained that life becomes heavy when people fill it with unnecessary worries. The future will come when it comes, but if someone keeps their eyes closed today, they may miss the gifts that today offers.

The sad man nodded slowly. He realized that his friend was right. For years, he had been living in fear of tomorrow instead of enjoying the present moment. He felt foolish and decided right there that he wanted to change. He no longer wanted to live in fear.

The happy man smiled warmly and said that was a wonderful decision. Then he lifted the purse of gold coins and held it out, declaring that the treasure belonged to both of them.

The sad man looked surprised and protested that since the happy man had found it, it was his alone. But the happy man shook his head and explained that they were friends. A journey was better when shared, and so was good fortune.

The sad man felt grateful and deeply touched by his friend's kindness. He thanked him sincerely.

The two friends stood up and continued their journey together. This time, however, something had changed. The sad man no longer walked with his head full of worries. Instead, he looked around at the trees, the sky, and the beautiful path ahead. He even smiled for the first time that day.

Soon, the happy man began singing again. After a moment, the sad man joined him. Their voices echoed along the road as they walked forward, sharing both the journey and the joy of the present moment.

From that day on, the once-sad man tried to live like his cheerful friend. Whenever a worried thought entered his mind, he reminded himself to keep his eyes open to the good things happening around him.

And so, the two friends continued their journey—not just along the road, but through life—singing songs, sharing laughter, and appreciating each moment as it came.
